Is it better to be feared or loved? A question posed in the 1400's that literally changed our understanding of politics today. But that was just a snarky letter to a prince from someone that was pretty daring. Someone unafraid to look authority in the eyes and say, "Hey dude, you are not the smartest person in the room. We are all smart and we all have something to bring to this table so don't be a jerk and let us help you do this." See Machiavelli was no a fool. He stated that he hadn't traveled. He hadn't done many things in his life, but what he had done was read. He had spoken to people who had traveled. He spoke to soldiers, farmers, merchants, aristocrats, priests, and so many others. He stood up to explain to the prince a the time, who had never really ruled before, that there are many different kinds of leaders...
No matter what kind of leader one chooses to be, there is a new emphasis on personal focuses. Personal needs that the leader must address in creating the "new culture". But to create a new culture means there are adjustments that need to be made with the old culture. The culture that clearly wasn't deemed suitable. The culture that is still held with pride under the new prince's eyes for appraisement. People who were once beloved and purposeful, become a reminder of the past. A problem because they are comfortable with the people. The people look to them for guidance, when the new leader is searching for their own grasp of ownership. The beloveds of the old culture are no longer needed, or important. They are expendable at the point of being made an example.
The thing is, many of these people understand the way the lands work. Some will bow a little differently to this new ruler, others will have their lives ended at the hands of this new rulers. The thing about European ideologies though is that life does not end there. Life will continue in a different path.
Maybe the time spent learning the people, and learning the ways. Standing alongside and watching when things worked but other didn't, and the manners in which society reacted to the successes and failures. Maybe they have developed enough love that could be almost martyrdom, while the new leader is left grasping at straws of perceptions of control. Maybe there is a role bigger for them if they take a chance on a long had dream to do something big. Do something so big and so outrageous that changed the world.
Maybe... just maybe... these advisors find their own hero's path towards greatness that is not making futile attempts to rule through fear, but embraces the power of love for a ruler that the fear only lies in maintaining the society for a greater good. But that takes creativity, and for that we would have to discuss another prince, one that is but a child.
A prince that realizes growing up is too often seen as single focus on personal gain. But that prince is a discussion for tomorrow. Today... today let's just consider if one needs to be feared or loved, and if it is possible to have both?
- The take over leaders: an individual that comes in with an army and builds his legacy on blood and surrender.
- The inherited leaders: an individual that gets handed a territory and then tries to fill a predecessor's shoes. Sometimes this means just being a kid following in dad or mom's steps, effective or not, or changing everything because the leader disagrees with the prior administration.
- The married in leaders: those that gain territory by associating themselves with another individual of already established monarchy.
